The water main is the supply line that runs from the city meter at the curb to where it enters your home. It's underground, it's invisible, and most homeowners never think about it — until it fails. But this pipe is your responsibility (not the city's), and when it leaks or breaks, you're looking at low water pressure, high water bills, and potentially a saturated yard or undermined foundation.

In Northern Utah, water main problems are most common in homes built before 1980. Many of these homes have galvanized steel or early polybutylene water mains that were expected to last 40–50 years. Those pipes are now well past their design life. Galvanized lines corrode from the inside, gradually reducing water pressure. Polybutylene (gray or blue plastic) becomes brittle and cracks at fittings. Both fail predictably — the only question is when.

We repair and replace water mains using modern materials — copper or high-density polyethylene (HDPE). For full replacements, we typically use directional boring (horizontal drilling) to install the new line without trenching your entire yard. For spot repairs, we excavate only the failed section. We coordinate with the city water department for meter-side connections and handle Blue Stakes utility locating before any digging.

A spot repair makes sense when the failure is isolated to one section (usually a fitting or joint) and the rest of the line is in good condition. Full replacement is the better investment when the pipe is galvanized or polybutylene (material is the problem, not just one spot), when you've already had multiple repairs, or when the water main is so corroded that pressure is significantly reduced.
