When Repair Won't Cut It — Full Sewer Line Replacement

Some sewer lines are past the point of spot repairs. When the camera shows damage throughout — multiple root intrusion points, extensive cracking, a bellied section where the pipe has sunk, or a line made of deteriorating Orangeburg or clay pipe — full replacement is the right call. Patching a failing line in one spot only delays the inevitable failure somewhere else.

We see this most often in pre-1970 homes throughout Murray, Midvale, Sugar House, and the Avenues. Original clay pipe joints loosen over decades as Utah's clay soil shifts seasonally, and Orangeburg pipe (a tar-impregnated cardboard product used from the 1940s–1970s) literally collapses under soil pressure. If your home was built before 1980 and you're experiencing recurring sewer problems, the camera will usually show a line that needs full replacement.

We offer two replacement methods: traditional excavation (digging a trench along the pipe path) and trenchless pipe bursting (pulling a new HDPE pipe through the old one). The right method depends on your pipe condition, property layout, and what's above the line — driveways, mature trees, or landscaping that you want to preserve.

Traditional Excavation vs. Trenchless Pipe Bursting

Traditional excavation is necessary when the line has severe bellies (the pipe has sunk and can't be followed by trenchless equipment), when there are sharp bends in the line, or when the existing pipe has completely collapsed and lost its path. We dig a trench along the old line, remove the damaged pipe, and install new Schedule 40 PVC at the correct grade. Trenchless pipe bursting works when the old pipe still has a viable path — we pull a new HDPE pipe through the old one, breaking the old pipe apart as the new one takes its place. This preserves your landscaping, driveway, and yard. Most residential pipe bursting jobs are completed in a single day.

  • Full camera inspection and condition report before recommending replacement
  • Traditional excavation with Schedule 40 PVC — the standard for durability and flow
  • Trenchless pipe bursting with HDPE — new pipe, no trench, minimal yard disruption
  • Proper grade and slope verification — we laser-level every installation
  • All permits, Blue Stakes locates, and city inspections handled by our team

Know the Warning Signs

Signs You Need Main Sewer Line Replacement

Catch these early to avoid a bigger, more expensive problem down the line.

Recurring Backups Despite Cleaning

If professional sewer cleaning provides only temporary relief and the line backs up again within weeks or months, the pipe itself has structural problems that cleaning can't fix.

Act Now

Camera Shows Widespread Damage

Multiple cracks, root entry points at every joint, offset connections, or a bellied section mean the entire line is compromised — not just one spot.

Act Now

Orangeburg or Clay Pipe in Camera Footage

Orangeburg pipe (black, fibrous-looking) and old clay pipe are at the end of their service life. If you still have these materials, replacement prevents emergency failure.

Sewer Line Belly Visible on Camera

A belly is a low point where the pipe has sunk, creating a spot where waste and water collect. Bellies cause chronic slow drainage and are not fixable without replacing that section.

Home Built Before 1970

If your home is over 55 years old and you're experiencing any sewer symptoms, the original pipe materials are likely near or past their expected lifespan.

Foundation or Yard Settling Near Sewer Path

Soil settling along the sewer line path can indicate a long-term leak that's been washing away soil around the pipe — a sign the line is failing underground.

How Our Service Works

01

Camera Inspection & Condition Report

We camera the entire main sewer line and document every issue — cracks, roots, offsets, bellies, and pipe material. You receive a recorded video and a written condition report.

02

Replacement Plan & Quote

Based on the camera findings and your property layout, we recommend traditional excavation or trenchless pipe bursting. You get a detailed written quote with the method, materials, timeline, and total cost.

03

Replacement

We complete the replacement using the agreed method. For traditional dig, we trench along the old line and install new PVC at proper grade. For pipe bursting, we pull new HDPE through the existing path. Both methods include all connections, cleanouts, and backfill.

04

Inspection, Camera & Warranty

The city inspector verifies the installation. We run a final camera to confirm proper grade and connections. You receive a 10-year warranty on parts and labor plus before-and-after footage.

The Towers Difference

Why Northern Utah Trusts Towers

Both Methods In-House

We own our excavation equipment and trenchless pipe bursting rig — no subcontractors. You deal with one crew from camera to final inspection.

Laser-Grade Verification

Every replacement line is installed at the correct slope using laser-level equipment. Proper grade prevents future bellies and ensures reliable drainage for decades.

10-Year Warranty

Every sewer line replacement includes a 10-year warranty on parts and labor. The pipe materials themselves are rated for 50+ years.

Full Permit & Restoration

We handle permits, inspections, utility locates, excavation, backfill, and surface restoration. For traditional dig, we restore soil grade and seed. You're not left with an unfinished yard.

Real Customers, Real Results

What Our Customers Say

Camera showed our entire clay sewer line was cracked and root-filled — the plumber said it was one of the worst he'd seen in Sandy. Towers replaced the whole thing with PVC in two days. They handled the permit, the city inspection, and even re-graded the yard where they dug. Three years later, not a single issue.
