New Water Main Without the Trench

Traditional water main replacement requires digging a trench from the city meter at the street to your home — typically 30 to 60 feet through your front yard. That trench crosses your lawn, may cut through a driveway or walkway, and disrupts any landscaping in its path. Directional boring (also called horizontal directional drilling) avoids most of that destruction by boring a new path underground and pulling the new pipe through it.

The process starts with a small pit at the meter and another at the house connection. A boring machine drills a pilot hole underground between the two points, then pulls the new water line (copper or PEX) back through the bored path. Your lawn gets two small holes instead of a 60-foot trench. Mature landscaping, concrete walkways, and driveways stay intact.

Trenchless water main replacement makes the most sense when the existing line runs under structures or features that are expensive to tear out and restore — concrete driveways, stamped patios, mature trees, or sprinkler systems. For straightforward yard runs with no obstacles, traditional trenching can be more cost-effective. We'll assess your property and recommend the method that makes the most sense.

When Trenchless Is the Smart Choice

Choose trenchless directional boring when your water main runs under a driveway, patio, walkway, or mature landscaping that would be expensive to repair after a traditional dig. It's also the better option when the yard is narrow or has limited access for excavation equipment. If your yard is open with no obstacles above the line, traditional trenching is often faster and less expensive. We evaluate both options for every job and recommend the one that gives you the best result for the cost.

  • Directional boring — new water line path bored underground, no surface trench
  • Copper or PEX pipe options — both rated for 50+ years of reliable service
  • Preserves driveways, patios, walkways, and landscaping above the line
  • Two small access pits instead of a full-length trench across your property
  • Same 10-year warranty as traditional replacement — the method is different, the quality isn't

Know the Warning Signs

Signs You Need Trenchless Main Water Line Repair

Catch these early to avoid a bigger, more expensive problem down the line.

Water Main Under a Concrete Driveway

If your water main runs under the driveway, traditional replacement means cutting and repaving concrete. Directional boring bypasses it entirely.

Watch This

Mature Landscaping Above the Water Line

Established trees, shrubs, and garden beds along the water main path would be destroyed by trenching. Boring preserves everything on the surface.

Watch This

Failing Water Main in a Narrow or Congested Yard

Tight spaces between the house and property line make traditional excavation difficult and more expensive. Directional boring requires less surface access.

Watch This

Sprinkler System Installed Over the Water Line

A trenched replacement would cut through sprinkler lines and require a full system repair. Boring goes underneath without disturbing existing utilities.

Watch This

Stamped or Decorative Concrete Patio in the Path

Stamped concrete can't be patched to match — it has to be completely redone. Trenchless avoids that cost entirely.

Watch This

Active Leak with Expensive Hardscaping Above

If the water main is actively leaking and traditional excavation would destroy high-value hardscaping, trenchless is the repair method that solves the problem without compounding the cost.

How Our Service Works

01

Site Assessment & Utility Locates

We evaluate the property layout, locate all underground utilities (Blue Stakes), and determine the boring path. We verify that directional boring is the right method for your specific situation.

02

Quote & Method Confirmation

You receive a written quote with the boring path, pipe material (copper or PEX), timeline, and total cost. We explain any factors that could affect the job.

03

Bore & Pull

We dig access pits at the meter and house connection, bore the pilot hole underground between them, and pull the new water line through. The old line is typically abandoned in place.

04

Connect, Test & Warranty

We connect the new line at the meter and the house, pressure-test the entire run to verify zero leaks, and restore the access pits. You receive a 10-year warranty on parts and labor.

The Towers Difference

Why Northern Utah Trusts Towers

Minimal Property Disruption

Two small pits instead of a trench across your entire front yard. Driveways, patios, and landscaping stay intact — no restoration costs on top of the plumbing bill.

Modern Pipe Materials

We install Type L copper or PEX — both rated for 50+ years and immune to the corrosion and scaling that failed your original line.

Honest Assessment

If your yard is open with no obstacles, we'll tell you traditional trenching is faster and more cost-effective. We recommend trenchless only when it genuinely saves you money or preserves something valuable.

Licensed & Insured

All directional boring is performed by our licensed crew with full liability coverage. We coordinate utility locates and handle all required permits.

Real Customers, Real Results

What Our Customers Say

The water main ran right under our stamped concrete driveway. Every other plumber said they'd have to cut out and repour the concrete — $8,000 just for the driveway before the plumbing. Towers bored under it. New copper line, driveway untouched, and the total was less than what the other guys quoted for the concrete work alone.

Trenchless directional boring for a residential water main typically costs $4,000–$8,000, depending on distance, depth, soil conditions, and pipe material.
