A standard drain cable (snake) punches a hole through a clog — it doesn't remove the buildup. Within weeks or months, the same grease, roots, or mineral deposits narrow the pipe again and you're calling for another clearing. Hydro jetting is fundamentally different: it uses 4,000 PSI of water pressure through a specialized nozzle that sprays forward and backward simultaneously, scouring the entire interior wall of the pipe back to its original diameter.

In Utah's hard water environment, hydro jetting is especially valuable because it removes the mineral scale that cable machines can't touch. Calcium and magnesium deposits harden on pipe walls over years, effectively reducing a 4-inch drain to 2 inches of usable diameter. We always camera the line before hydro jetting. This is non-negotiable. Jetting a pipe that's structurally compromised (cracked, collapsed, or severely deteriorated) can cause damage. The camera shows us the pipe condition, the nature of the blockage, and the pipe material — all of which determine whether jetting is appropriate and what pressure setting to use.

Hydro jetting makes sense when: drains clog repeatedly (the buildup isn't being removed), the camera shows grease or mineral scale lining the pipe, root intrusion keeps returning after cable cutting, or you want a thorough preventive cleaning of your main sewer line. It's not needed for every clog — a simple hair clog or one-time kitchen backup is better served by a standard cable at lower cost.
