When you’re studying to become a plumber or are a plumbing apprentice, you are likely to be overwhelmed with materials, techniques, and all sorts of other fun lessons. This is understandable because the plumbing field is a wide one and covers a ton of information. We have put together a quick list of common materials that you will work with when you are in the field. Keep reading for more information!
Trusty Old Cast Iron
Cast iron pipes have been used for ages. In fact, if you plan to work with older homes, you’ll probably work exclusively with them!
They have been used for centuries because they are durable and can withstand high water pressure when used in the bathroom and kitchen.
These pipes are more costly to use and to replace than other options, however, pipe liners do exist and can help in extending the life of the pipe.
Chromed Copper Beauty
Chromed copper pipes are beautiful and they work extremely well! These pipes are made of copper and finished with chrome to give a very clean look.
Because they come in a variety of sizes, extreme customization is rarely needed to make repairs.
Chromed copper pipes are almost as durable as cast iron but not as expensive to replace. These pipes can also be welded together as needed.
Light, Versatile PVC
PVC is short for Poly Vinyl Chloride piping and is made of extremely hard plastic.
This type of piping is often favored because it is light and easy to cut through while still being durable and easily used indoors or underground. It is also far less expensive than chromed copper or cast iron.
When to Replace Piping
Part of a plumber’s job is replacing pipes. However, a plumber's reputation will not hold up very long if they tell customers they’re always in need of replacements instead of repairs. People may see this as a tactic or an upsell, so it is important to know exactly when pipe replacements are needed. Here are a few examples of when pipes need to be replaced:
- Piping is old and deteriorating.
- There is a complete pipe burst.
- New fixture installations are needed.
- There are damaged connections or fittings.
These are all signs of major issues with pipes that cannot be patched. If the problem with the pipe is less severe, it is great to recommend a patch (if it will get the job done.) No matter what, be able to explain to the customer why you recommend the things you do.
