How to Handle Common Summer Plumbing Problems

Remember when summer was a relaxing time meant for lounging by the pool? If you have that, our crew of plumbers is jealous. If your summer is full of chaperoning, hosting summer BBQs, and playing with your children, we feel you!

Summer fun, unfortunately, leads to a few popular plumbing issues. Take a look at the popular problems that we see and our tips on how to prevent and/or fix them.

Problem: Scuba Steve in the Toilet

Hear that uncomfortable gurgle from the toilet? It could just be that one of your little ones sent a friend — think matchbox car or Legos — for a ride down the toilet. Oops.

Even if your home doesn’t have foreign objects in the commode, when the kids are home from school, that means more visits to the bathroom. Frequent trips and overusing toilet paper can result in a clogged toilet.

Solution: Send a Rescue Mission

First things first, have a heart-to-heart with the kids on the correct amount of toilet paper to use each flush. Trust us, your toilet will thank you.

Second of all, if your blockage doesn’t involve metal or plastic object that could obstruct your pipes down the line, try removing it with a plunger. If that doesn’t work, or if you require an extraction mission, call a Towers plumber for help.

Problem: Washing Machine Overload

Now that the kiddos are home, and they are playing more outside, we bet that your laundry is piling up! The added loads mean added stress for the machine, resulting in possible maintenance.

Solution: Keep an eye out.

We suggested staying at home while your machine is running. This way, you can notice a problem, quickly stop the load, and call a professional for help. Another pro tip: move the machine away from the wall to keep the hose from kinking.

Above all, be sure to clean the dryer vents routinely to prevent fires in your home.

Problem: Backed up Sewer Lines

It’s no secret that the Salt Lake area hosts a dry heat in the summer. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t get our fair share of summer thunderstorms in between the blistering-hot days. Extra rain can find its way into your sewer system through cracks and cause the line to back up.

Solution: Call for Back Up

This problem will always require professional help from your trusted plumbers at Towers. Keep your eye out for signs of your sewer backing up or trouble with your mainline: such as the toilet frequently backing up, a clogged shower drain, or trouble with water drainage anywhere else in your home.

Are you dealing with one or more of these common, summer problems? Call the expert team of plumbers at Towers at (801) 266-3529 for help. With over 70 years of experience, we’ve seen it all and we can help.
